An article by council insider and Nationalist contributor ‘Frustrated’.
I recently described how the mayor of the Labour run ‘Sanctuary City’ of Salford, Paul Dennett, gave in to an embarrassing “tent city” protest outside the Swinton Civic Centre by new ‘refugees’. These former ‘asylum seekers’ were given refugee status under the old Tory (now Labour) Home Office’s “accelerated asylum scheme”, which really gives thousands of illegal immigrants an amnesty!
Dennett said that this led to asylum seekers being evicted from tax-payer funded accommodation (in hotels) and left them without anywhere to stay, adding to an already acute ‘housing crisis’ in the city. Thus in response to these new ‘refugees’ embarrassing ‘tent city’ protest outside his civic centre. Dennett immediately reopened a former school in Swinton, which was turned into an emergency overnight shelter for these new rough sleepers, kitted out with sun loungers and blow-up beds.
Consequently, this successful ‘refugee’ tactic of embarrassing Labour council leaders into giving them costly temporary accommodation by a ‘tent city’ protest outside their town hall is spreading!
Another ‘tent city’ sprung up outside Manchester Town Hall this spring, with organisers refusing to remove it until the council agrees ‘a deal for a solution to open buildings’ for these rough sleepers. However, unlike Salford City Council, which opened a school, Manchester City Council said it did not have any more available space. Nevertheless, Manchester City Council did despatch teams to get these new rough sleeping homeless people into expensive temporary accommodation. Indeed, their efforts recently saw 100 people moved off the streets and into temporary accommodation.
According to a recent BBC-funded Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) in the Manchester Evening News, a Manchester City Council spokesperson said, “The Council understands a majority of people sleeping around the THX (Town Hall Extension) are refugees, and we recognise the difficult position they are in, and we are working alongside our commissioned partner organisation the Mustard Tree, to provide support and where appropriate, accommodation.”
The council spokesperson added, “During routine welfare checks surrounding people who are sleeping in tents outside the Town Hall Extension (THX), staff have learnt that several of the tents may have been abandoned over the course of the past week. In cases where tents have clearly been abandoned, steps will be taken to remove them due to the clear health hazard they pose to people using the building and the surrounding area.”
Along with eight other Greater Manchester regional councils, both Manchester City Council and Salford City Council make up the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
According to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), this region’s councils expect to spend a total of £75 million on temporary housing this year (2024) as they struggle to deal with the growing demand for affordable homes from native Mancunians who are now joined by thousands of newly made homeless, former ‘asylum seekers’ who have been given refugee status by the Home Office.
Salford’s Mayor, Paul Dennett, is also the Deputy Mayor for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and is their lead member for homelessness as the portfolio holder for ‘Housing First’.
In his role as Deputy Mayor of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Paul Dennett recently whined that overspending on temporary accommodation had become an “existential threat” to councils around the region. He cried, “We are seeing councils up and down the country going bankrupt and overspending on temporary accommodation is a significant element of that. This should be a huge concern across this country right now and for us in Greater Manchester!”
Under this Labour Government, there is no end in sight to both legal and illegal mass immigration. So our homelessness crisis will only worsen, and our young people will struggle to afford a home. Labour seems to be oblivious to their plight and more concerned about accommodating migrants!
