It just won’t go away, no matter how much the authorities threaten people with arrest and the shame of your neighbours knowing that you are ‘one of them’.
I can imagine Frieda and Karl, our fictitious liberal German couple (pro-EU, think all refugees should be allowed in and are ashamed of everything about Germany’s past), reacting in horror to reports that the disgusting “Auslander Raus” song has gone viral. Imagine the scene at a dinner party with like-minded friends:
Karl: “It’s truly disappointing to hear that police in Germany have had to respond to so many incidents since last October where people were singing hateful slogans along to the popular techno song, “L’amour toujours”. The fact that individuals are using music as a platform to spread messages of intolerance and exclusion is alarming.”
Frida: “It’s important for us to remember that music should bring people together, not tear them apart. Let’s continue to spread positivity and acceptance through the power of music and unity.”
Thankfully, Karl and Frida are made up characters, and most sensible Germans would think that their views are mad. Unfortunately, the thought-crime police don’t, and have decided that anyone singing the ‘forbidden’ words to the song must be a threat to the Constitution (drafted by the Allied occupiers of Germany after the Second World War) and punished.
Since October 2023, police in Germany have been called out more than 360 times because people sang the slogan “Ausländer Raus! Deutschland Den Deutschen” (Foreigners Out, Germany for the Germans). These numbers do not include the federal states of Saxony and Bavaria and are only the times when somebody has reported this horrific ‘crime’. According to the Bild newspaper, the true number is expected to be much higher than the current figures.
Police were sent out most often in North Rhine-Westphalia, with a total of 96 offences recorded between November 2023 and June 2024. Following closely behind is Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with 45 cases reported.
In true Stasi style, it was also reported that the song was performed on two separate occasions in schoolyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and it was also shared twice on social media platforms. Additionally, a student from Sassnitz sang the song during a class session. Oh, how Starmer and his chums in the political police would love to have these surveillance powers!
The recorded incidents occurred at public festivals, in discotheques, at educational institutions and at private parties. It is unclear whether singing the slogan in public is actually a crime. Shouting “Foreigners out” is not in itself a criminal offence the Federal Court of Justice has ruled several times in the past.
In November 2023, a video surfaced of a group of young men singing a slogan in a discotheque, set to the tune of the song “L’amour toujours”. This catchy clip quickly went viral. The video spread online, and other users created memes and parodies. The phenomenon attracted a lot of attention in May 2024 after a video appeared on social networks showing partygoers at a bar in Sylt singing the slogan to the song.
The liberal left was outraged and demanded punishment for these dangerous extremists. An SPD politician published the names of the people involved on the web. A woman seen in the video was fired on the spot from her job at an advertising agency.
The song has also been popular amongst football fans at the European Football Championships, with numerous videos posted of Hungarian, Croatian, Polish and Italian supporters taking up the chant. Before the match against Turkey, Austrian fans also sang the Nationalist version. The Leipzig police are investigating.
