£75,000 a week Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood, has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.
The 21-year-old England international, originally from Bradford but now living in Bowdon, Trafford, will appear in court in Manchester this coming Monday, October 17. All three counts relate to the same woman.
The CPS said the charges, in full, are – attempting to rape a woman 16 or over, with a date specified as October 22, 2021; engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour, with a period between December 1, 2018 and October 15, 2022 specified; and assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, with a period between December 12, 2021 and December 31, 2021 detailed.
Greenwood was originally arrested in January on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman, before being further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. He has been on bail since 2 February.
Greenwood has remained suspended by Manchester United since the allegations came to light after a string of social media posts. He last played for the Premier League side on 22 January.
Mason Greenwood signed a 5 year / £19,500,000 contract with the Manchester United, including an annual average salary of £3.9 million. The football club are contractually bound to continue paying Greenwood’s £75,000-a-week salary despite suspending him after he was arrested.
